QR Codes may be the next big sensation in marketing and social media, but are businesses ready to start using them? Would there be any added value for business owners to invest their time and effort into using this technology? Other countries, like Japan, have been using them for years, but here in the United States their take off hasn’t sky-rocketed just yet.
Also known as 2D Barcodes, these little black and white squares have a promising future. Using them now would definitely be showing your customers that you are tech savvy and not afraid to embrace new ideas. Most people start by linking their web site information or some type of useful data to the codes. This type of advertising could help a business reach out to a wide demographic of people, without incurring the additional costs.
It won’t be a magic fix all; the business owner will still need to educate their clientele on what these things are, and how to use them. Interaction with your patrons is always a priority. With the increasing use of mobile phones and social media, this is a way to put relevant information in the hands of your customers almost immediately.
It probably wouldn’t be wise to dump all other means of advertising just yet. These QR Codesare still a very new technology (in the U.S) and people will need to become educated as to how they work. However, the more the technology is used the more people will see it and become familiar with what it is. It’s just a matter of time, because we’re all ready starting to see these codes being used during some commercials, and in a few magazines; once people become aware of them, they will start to notice their use much more.
Lastly, consider the cost of this type of advertising is very low. If you have business cards, next time you place an order, just add the black and white graphic. Same goes for your brochures, billboards and other current sales material. But make sure to avoid a common mistake…design a special landing page just for those people scanning. Offer a coupon or special info. The magic will soon catch on and many will be left behind…don’t be one of the them!
